Children’s Ministry Parking Lot Gathering

On Sunday, January 24, join us for a Children’s Ministry Family Parking Lot Gathering from 2:00-2:45 p.m.; All participants must wear a mask. Sign up here

Inclusivitree Project

We invite you and your household to take part in a congregational collective art project. We are creating a Tree of Inclusivity to be a symbol of diversity and inclusion for our congregation and community.  Cut-out fabric hand tracings will be the tree’s leaves. Today, January 17, during drive-thru communion (2:00-3:30 p.m.), you are invited to pick up some fabric and instructions to trace the hand of each member of your family.  Beginning on Monday, January 18, the tracings of our hands will be adhered to a “tree.”  Our tree will be periodically on display on UPC’s front porch, reminding us that our individual differences are vibrant together, and make for a richer, more beautiful congregation and community.  By celebrating our diversity, we help to create a more inclusive future.

Drive-Thru Communion:

Join us for drive-thru communion from 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the UPC parking lot. Please enter the parking lot from the Franklin St. entrance and we will bring you individually-wrapped elements from the Lord’s Table. All are welcome.

We Want to Hear From You:

“nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”‘ -Luke 17:21  We want to know where you’ve seen God in your daily lives. Have you seen God or felt the Spirit’s presence at the grocery store, on an evening walk, or maybe during a FaceTime call with family far away? Submit your story here so that we can share it with the larger UPC community.

Presbyterian Youth Connection:

Youth are invited to join in for a Racial Equity Intensive for the spring semester. This 8 session commitment begins today and is designed for youth who desire to better understand the foundations of white privilege and the role Christians play in dismantling racism in our country. Our beliefs will be challenged in ways that bring about a better understanding of our individual and collective responsibility. We will use music, videos, movies, and history to help inform our place and role in the struggle toward justice. Each week our group will wrestle with our own understanding as we come into new ways of seeing race and how we play a part in the systems of oppression that have long been a part of our country’s identity. Through our collective work and some that you will do on your own, we will grow, stretch, and learn. Read more at www.upcch.org/pyc and click here to register.

A New Year–or is it?

What should I do with my life?  What does God want me to do? Confused?  Undecided?  A Stephen Minister can serve as a listening ear while you explore these questions.  Contact Meg to talk about having. Stephen Minister.

Weekly Announcements Sunday, December 20th

Progressive Nativity:

Watch the Nativity Scene Unfold Before Your Eyes! Begin your journey by driving through UPC on Sunday, December 20, anytime between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Children will be given bells, and you will get initial instructions. The journey will continue to several homes in the Southern Village neighborhood of Chapel Hill. You will be emailed instructions ahead of time to download a playlist that will help tell the story as you go. Sign up here to let us know you plan to join us.

Presbyterian Youth Connection:

“Singing’s my favorite!” Wear your craziest Christmas clothing and join us for covid safe Christmas Caroling. New research shows that singing while masked for 30 minutes or less, outdoors and distanced, is safe. We will gather in the UPC Parking lot for some Christmas Caroling fun and games. The time between songs will allow aerosols to settle. All 6th-12th graders are invited to join in!

Zoom Conversation with Pastor Vanessa:

Please join Pastor Vanessa for an hour of conversation on Dec. 21 at 2:00. This will be a good opportunity to talk with her and to learn more about her ministry and call to UPC. So, bring a cup of coffee or tea and get to know her better. Join here via Zoom.

Christmas Blues:

The holidays can cause people to feel anxious and depressed. Do you need a confidential listener—someone to encourage discussions about concerns and to help you acknowledge difficult feelings? Contact Meg if you are having Christmas “blues” and would like a Stephen Minister to share with.

Alternative Gift Market:

You can go now to the UPCCH website and order a donation to honor friends, family, co-workers and anyone else you want to remember with a gift. The website will lead you to a link where you can order your gift and you can, then, print descriptive inserts to include in your own greeting cards. You can make orders on the Alternative Gift Market website through December 27th. Give the world a gift by giving an Alternative Gift.

Diaper Drive for the Refugee Support Center:

Presbyterian Women are sponsoring a diaper drive for the Refugee Support Center. Because we are not meeting in person and cannot deliver diapers to the church as we have the last two years, please consider supporting this ministry by mailing a check made out to UPC, with Diaper Project in the memo line, to the church. We will buy diapers in January, based on the needs of the RSC, for February delivery. Questions? Contact Vicki Lotz, vjlotz@live.unc.edu.
