Our children’s and youth music programs help our young people learn to sing the faith and lead in worship.
Alleluia Choir
Ages: preK-5th grade
Rehearsal Time: Sundays, 4:00-4:25 pm
The Alleluia Choir is a warm and welcoming place for young children to explore their creative and spiritual gifts in music. Young musicians sing the faith while learning the fundamentals of music and building teamwork, discipline and leadership skills. Members of this ensemble sing twice a semester in worship (including at Children’s Sabbath, Lessons and Carols, Easter, and at Carol Woods) and enjoy various opportunities for fun, fellowship and service to the community.
The Alleluia Choir serves as a preparatory ensemble for the UPC Chorister Program. Rising 3rd graders who demonstrate an interest in furthering their musical skills and serving as a committed leader in worship will be encouraged to join the Chorister Program.
3rd – 5th graders who are looking for an opportunity to sing with fewer commitments are welcome to continue singing and serving as leaders in the Alleluia Choir.
UPC Choristers
Ages: 3rd grade and older
Rehearsal Time: Sundays, 4:30-5:10 pm
The Chorister Program is designed for young musicians who exhibit a special interest in being challenged musically and more importantly, a passion to serve the worship life of our church in a robust capacity. Choristers grow as leaders and musicians by committing to weekly rehearsals and leading worship regularly, singing often with the adult choirs as one unified ensemble twice a month. Together, Choristers and Chancel Choir members sing great choral music that spans five centuries of composition.
The Chorister Program of University Presbyterian Church is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music in America (rscmamerica.org), an eccumenical organization dedicated to promoting church music, musical education and worship skills. Choristers work through a graded curriculum and are awarded medals at a ceremony in worship each semester.
Choristers in good standing are invited to attend the annual Montreat Music and Worship Conference Summer Camp in June. This is an exciting opportunity for outdoor fun, bonding and music making surrounded by God’s beauty in the NC mountains.
